10 Best Books for Comfort and Healing

Sometimes life hits us with something.
A breakup. A loved one getting sick. A redundancy.
Or even something smaller… just one of those days where everything feels a bit off.

That’s when I reach for one of my all-time favourite comfort reads.

Not something heavy or challenging. Not something that asks too much of me.
Just something warm, familiar, and quietly comforting.
The kind of book that feels like a soft place to land.

These are my go-to comfort reads:

  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
A classic I come back to time and time again. There’s something grounding about it, like returning to an old friend.
  • A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once. A reminder that people aren’t always what they seem.
  • The BFG or Matilda
Or really… anything by Roald Dahl.
Pure nostalgia, imagination, and a little bit of magic.
  • Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Because if we’re honest… most of us have had days where we’ve wanted to just pack up and start again somewhere new. Especially eating loads of bowls of pasta and meeting a new love interest along the way!
  • Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding
For many of us in our forties, this feels oddly familiar.
A reminder that life is messy, funny, imperfect… and still completely ours.
  • Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder
One of my favourites growing up, and the book that led me to study philosophy.
It brings a sense of curiosity and wonder back into everyday life.
  • Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
A gentle nudge that it’s never too late to try something new, to create, to begin again.
  • Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
A quiet, powerful reminder that healing can happen in the most unexpected ways.
  • Anything by Kristin Hannah
Engrossing, emotional, and full of strong female characters. The kind of books you disappear into.
  • The Correspondent by Virginia Evans – The newest one of the list and a recent finish but I know I will be revisitng again!

If I had to sum it up, comfort reads aren’t about escape in the dramatic sense.
They’re about returning… to yourself, to something familiar, to something that reminds you you’ll be okay.

Please comment and tell me – what is your go-to comfort book?
